A Gathering of Voices
Our first letters will go for the three prisoners featured here. They are all  stuck in prison because of Wisconsin's policy of repeatedly denying parole to old law prisoners, the prisoners sentenced before the new "truth in Sentencing law."

SECOND CHANCE FOR PRISONERS LETTER WRITING NETWORK
Hello,
In the 11 years of FFUP’s existance, it has become clear that there will be no improvement in lives of prisoners or their families and the prisons in Wisconsin unless those who care come together. It is time for a concerted effort to build a strong voice for the rights and needs of prisoners and their families.
Enclosed are three letters explaining the situation of three prisoners. The idea for this network is modeled after Amnesty International’s network. They advocate for international political prisoners and actually get folks released. The idea is this:
A 4 page flier ( two sheets) is sent to members each month which includes a one page cover letter and  three letters for prisoners. The letters will already be written. They can be rewritten and shortened or just xeroxed.  Then 2 copies are made of each letter and one of each is sent to the authority addressed and one to the prisoner. There would be three cases a month.   Members will use FFUP return address for their letters and we will make it clear to the authorities we write that they can verify signatures by coming to FFUP.
This network is open to anyone.  All become members by agreeing to write for other families' loved ones and larger issues not just for their own friend or loved one. Each month  they read the letters, look at documents posted on the web if they want to,  and decide if they want to help these specific prisoners. We will have a committee to decide which issues are brought up each month. Our goal is to get 50 letters sent for each case. Below are  summaries of our first three cases and full letters to be copies follow in next three pages . Details of their cases plus documents are on the web: www.letternetwork.blogspot.com . It is linked to our general web: prisonforum.org.
These are interesting times. People all over the world have begun to realize that our leaders are not going to save us or make our lives better:- That it is up to us. As I write this, the rulers in Egypt and Tunisia have fallen , there is fighting in Lybia, and there are thousands of protesters in Madison. No matter what the outcome in any of these struggles, it is a good time of rising awareness. We ask you to help us bring the voice of prisoners to public awareness.

This month’s cases:
1)Timothy  Olinger SR 166554; Winnebago Corr Center; PO Box 219; Winnebago, Wi 54985
This man was recommended for parole by commissioner William Francis, and Alfonso Graham overoad it saying he has not served sufficient time for punishment. This man is has a driving job,and pays rent at the center, works with civiliansand and has proven himself reliable. This denial of parole makes no sense and is heartbreaking for waiting family as well as for Timothy.
2)Carlos Abadia #222093: Red granite Correctional Institute; PO Box 925; Red Granite 54970
This is the sidewise way many prisoners are denied parole- they are denied programming. Carlos writes of “Dead time” – what prisoners a call the years and years they have to wait for any kind of meaningful programming even though they are elligible. Carlos has been working hard on his programming and is being transfered to a medium facility and family and friends fully expected he would get his programming but he is being denied , resulting in many more years entombed.
3) Ron Schilling#32219 OCI PO Box 900, Oregon, Wi  53575 :
Ron,  in his 60’s,has been in prison over thirty years.  Was granted  parole by Leonard Wells about eight years ago and  then Wells changed his mind.  Was told last parole hearing that all he needed was a stable situation . He has had them on and off but friends and family do not wait forever. Has good situation now but is still denied. That this man is still in prison shows the real corruption of the system .

Ron Schilling has been in prison for over 30 years and has been elligible for parole for over 17 of those years. Over the 11 years we have known him, we have developed an extensive bog, complete with wonderful essays and a detailed explanation of the no parole debacle.
